A Response to “Low-Carb Eating and Cardiovascular Risk Factors” in Obesity Reviews
Here’s a response to the article in my last post. W.S. Yancy, a well-known low-carb advocate, is one of the authors. So maybe the original article is critical of low-carb eating.

January 7, 2013 · 6:05 PMThe current issue of Obesity Reviews has an article entitled “Low-carbohydrate diets and cardiovascular risk factors.” I haven’t read it but predict that the authors found lowered triglycerides, higher HDL cholesterol, unchanged or slightly higher LDL cholesterols, and lower blood pressures in those eating sufficiently low-carb. All these changes would tend to reduce risk of heart attack and cardiac death. The article’s not free but you can probably pick it up for $20-40 (USD).

David Mendosa reviewed some reviews on home blood glucose monitor accuracy and reproducibility. He was motivated by a recent review in Consumer Reports. You’ll want to click through his links for details. The last time I looked into this, I learned that a device could receive FDA approval if it could measure accuracy to within 20% of the actual blood sugar value as determined by a laboratory machine. For a blood sugar of 200 mg/dl (11.1 mmol/l), the home device could give you a value anywhere between 160 and 240 mg/dl (8.9 to 13.3 mmol/l). That doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, does it?
